I think it is always a good thing to end the year on a positive note. So here is your feel good ad of the year with a bit of schadenfreude thrown in. For those unfamiliar with this term, it is a German word meaning joy at the misfortunes of others you don’t like. In this case, the departure of unloved dictators.
The ‘hero’ of our ad of the year is Robert Mugabe who becomes a little misty eyed when he recalls the good old days. Nandos, a South African based company which is franchised in many countries around the world, produced a series of comic ads, but it was this one that raised the ire of the ruling party in neighbouring Zimbabwe. Nandos ended up withdrawing the ad when party members started threatening local members of staff.
The one thing that dictators fear the most, is being ridiculed. You almost feel sorry for Mugabe at the end. (I particularly liked the Titanic scene.)
From the marketing perspective, the ad has gone viral, giving Nando’s far more publicity, both through YouTube and through the media proving controversy pays. Unfortunately for Mugabe, although the ad is off the air, it will be on the internet forever. Enjoy.
